มาชมกีต้าร์ Handmade Custom Guitar “Santa Cruz” ที่โรงงานตั้งอยู่ที่เมือง Santa Cruz รัฐ แคลิฟอร์เนีย ประเทศ สหรัฐอเมริกากันครับ
คนก่อตั้งชื่อว่า Richard Hoover เป็นผู้ก่อตั้งหลักกีต้าร์ Santa Cruz ได้ย้ายมาอยู่ที่เมือง Santa Cruz, California เมื่อปี 1972 เป็นช่วงที่เขามีกีต้าร์ Martin D28 ใช้งานอยู่ แต่กีต้าร์ Martin ได้ถูกขโมยไปช่วงนั้นก็ไม่มีเงินจะซื้อกีต้าร์ใหม่ ประจวบกับจังหวะได้รู้จักช่างกีต้าร์คลาสสิกในย่านนั้น ชื่อว่า Bruce MaGuire โดย Richard ก็ได้เรียนรู้วิธีทำกีต้าร์ในตอนนั้น หลังจากนัั้นเขาได้ร่วมงานซ่อม-สร้างเครื่องดนตรี และร่วมงานสร้าง Mandolin กับช่าง David Morse และ Darol Anger
ปี 1976 Richard Hoover กับช่างกีต้าร์ท้องถิ่นชื่อ William David และ Bruce Ross ก่อตั้งบริษัทผลิตกีต้าร์ Santa Cruz Guitar Company ขึ้นมา ในช่วงนั้นกีต้าร์ที่ดังในตลาดคือ Martin Gibson และ Guild โดยกีต้าร์ Santa Cruz เริ่ม copy กีต้าร์ Martin ทรง Dreadnought “D-28” กีต้าร์ตัวแรกของพวกเขาเริ่มใช้ไม้ koa มาทำกีต้าร์
ในช่วงนั้นเป็นช่วงยุค 70 ที่เศรษฐกิจอเมริกาตกต่ำ (ปัญหายาเสพติด) ทำให้คุณภาพการผลิตกีต้าร์อเมริกันตกลง ทำให้มีความต้องการกีต้าร์คุณภาพแบบ custom made มากขึ้น กีต้าร์ Santa Cruz ถือว่าโดดเด่น และมีการใส่แนวคิดต่างๆในการออกแบบกีต้าร์ได้อย่างดี
ปี 1978 ช่าง David หนึ่งในผู้ก่อตั้งได้ถอนตัวไปทำธุรกิจอื่น ในขณะนั้นกีต้าร์ Santa Cruz ก็ได้ผลิตเป็นทรง Dreadnought ทั้งนั้น เพราะเป็นทรงที่ให้พลังเสียงดีมาก แต่ Santa Cruz ได้ร่วมพัฒนากีต้าร์ทรงใหม่ ทรงใหม่ทรงแรกที่ไม่ใช่ Dreadnought เรียกว่า ทรง “H” ซึ่งมาจากชื่อย่อของช่างชื่อ Paul Hosteller ผู้ที่แนะนำให้ทำกีต้าร์ตามแบบ Gibson’s small แต่มีความหนามากขึ้น เหมือนกีต้าร์ Nick Lucas Guitar
กีต้าร์ทรงต่างๆ ของ Santa Cruz ได้ทำตามแบบ Custom มากมายเช่น OM 00 000 หรือ Jumbo แต่ทรงที่ได้รับความนิยมมากคือทรง F และ FS เป็นทรง small jumbo เหมาะสำหรับ Finger Style ส่วน PJ เป็นทรง parlor สำหรับขนาดเล็กซึ่งทรงนี้ต่อมาพัฒนาเป็นรุ่น Firefly นอกจากนั้นยังมีรุ่น Signature ได้แก่ Tony Rice (dreadnought), Janis Ian (14-fret parlor), SONiA (based on the H model), and Bob Brozman (baritone)
กีต้าร์ Santa Cruz ออกแบบโดยคงรูปลักษณ์ภายนอกเอาไว้เพื่อให้คุ้นเคยกับคนใช้กีต้าร์เดิม แต่พยายามปรับปรุงลักษณะภายในของกีต้าร์ ได้แก่ Bracing การจูนความหนาของไม้ (Santa Cruz มีช่างที่ผ่านงานทำ violin มากมาย การจูนเสียงกีต้าร์ Santa Cruz จึงมีเอกลักษณ์และมาจากการจูน Violin ซึ่งไม้หน้ามีการจูนความหนา-บาง แตกต่างกันมาก)
